While touring the National Road through Indiana in 2005, we were taking photos of some row houses in Centerville, which had an arch that led behind to the old stables. An incident we will never forget: A lady saw us across the street taking photos and asked if we'd like to see the inside! It was being remodeled and she wanted to show tourists what the old place looked like. We explained that we were doing a history tour of the national road and she thought that was great. So there are people who are more than happy to help preserve history, but sadly, as with your experience, we also had places we were denied access to our tour. As you say, history can be lost a bit at a time.
